I figure I’ll do a countdown here, a Top Ten. I’ll start with tracks, and do an “albums” later.
So let’s start with Number Ten, and count down from there.
Cee-Lo Green: “Fuck You.”
I’m not going to try to add any thing more than the general consensus has already said, but then I’ve also not paid attention that closely to what the general consensus was, so what-ever. But I’m pretty sure everybody agreed that this single was a tremendous hit of joy, and especially a double-hit coming from a song called “Fuck You.” But Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You” is a freedom, a chain-breaking (bittersweet or no) call-to-his-own-arms that not only put you right in the single-man car with him, but also made you dance.
I feel like dance-y songs were big this year? Is that true? Looking at my list: sort of true. But maybe it was just the bleak mood hanging over the year that made the best of the best shine through with optimism, rather than pessimism. There’s nothing wrong with optimism (there’s nothing wrong with pessimism, either— musically speaking), especially not in melodic optimism.
Hats off to everyone this year for doing some sun-searching.
