No one really seems to get “Congratulations.” Or rather, people “got” it, like, they knew what MGMT were trying to do, but no one seemed to really connect with it. Which is a shame, because they’re actually missing out on of the years secret Pop Gems! Yes, that’s right, MGMT’s “difficult” second album is a Pop Gem, something I’ll fully stand by as my choice of “something that should be Top 40 if Top 40 was good.”

The album was daring and full of hooks— and Flash Delirium the hookiest of all. My recollection of the reaction to the song being “cut-together” “collaged” “stitched”, things that made the song sound like it was more Music Concrete than Concrete Music. Upon hearing these reviews, I wondered if people were even listening to the same song. “Flash” doesn’t sound cut-together to me, it sounds like it’s the most finely composed song of the last year!

What it really makes me want to do is hear what that band does next! So there.
