Sufjan returned! And better yet, he confounded expectations! Was there a Banjo on any part of Age of Adz? Maybe not, but who cares, when his unbridled creative majesty was ALL over the place and made for a thrilling listen that apparently adults couldn’t understand.
But I identified more with the nearly 20-minute guitar workout “Djohariah,” on the precursor to Adz, the All Delighted People EP. This long-ass jam doesn’t feel anything like it’s epic length, and is so good at building up it’s components that you don’t even notice it until you’re almost overwhelmed by the beautiful sounds. Then it’s all stripped away into a few beautiful verses of Sufjan at his plaintive best.
